What is the Digital Product Passport?
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a tool created by the European Union designed to bring greater transparency, traceability and circularity to products circulating in the European market.
In practice, it is a digital record associated with each product, containing detailed information about its composition, origin, environmental performance, possibilities for reuse or recycling, and much more.
This passport will become mandatory for various sectors as early as 2026.
Why this new requirement?
The DPP is part of the new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and responds to an urgent need: increasing transparency throughout the value chain of products placed on the European market, driving the adoption of sustainable and circular practices, shaped by market competitiveness and demands.
With the DPP, it will be possible to:
- Disclose the environmental impact of products;
- Increase the competitiveness of companies adopting circular practices;
- Empower value chain actors and consumers to make more informed choices;
- Support compliance with the EU’s new legal requirements.
What kind of information does the DPP include?
The content of the DPP varies by sector but may include:
- Raw materials used;
- Environmental impact;
- Environmental certifications;
- Instructions for repair, reuse and recycling;
- Origin and journey of materials;
- Information for authorities, recyclers and consumers.
Who will be required to implement the DPP?
The DPP will gradually become mandatory for all manufacturers, importers and distributors placing products on the European market.
The implementation timeline begins in 2026 and will cover sectors such as:
- Textiles and clothing
- Footwear
- Furniture
- Electrical and electronic equipment
- Batteries and accumulators
- Vehicles and components (including tyres and lubricants)
- Chemicals (including detergents, paints and solvents)
- Construction materials
- Plastics and packaging
- Metals (iron, steel and aluminium)
- Mattresses

For many entities, implementing the DPP represents a technical and organisational challenge. But it is also a strategic opportunity to:
- modernise processes,
- collect relevant data,
- and align with the EU’s sustainability goals.
